ViewFromBackOfShedThe Vale of Berkeley Railway is one of those rare chances to become involved in a new heritage railway that really is different in so many ways.

Situated in Gloucestershire, alongside the stunningly beautiful Severn Estuary and enjoying a mainline connection to the Bristol-Birmingham main line at one end and Gloucester Shipping Canal and Sharpness Docks at the other, we are working alongside local attractions and businesses to create a unique partnership that will help to regenerate the area.

We aim to:

Operate heritage steam hauled passenger trains over the whole of the Sharpness branch

Share the branch with freight provider Direct Rail Services

A huge commitment to restoring, and where necessary, recreating our rail and maritime heritage.

Provide a base for the celebration of a huge collection of historic locomotives, carriages and wagons, supported by enviable restoration and stabling facilities

Develop a unique partnership with the Canal & River Trust, Direct Rail Services, Network Rail and Sharpness Docks.

Help us to:

Recreate the stations at Sharpness and Berkeley as they were before closure

Relocate and re-assemble an authentic Brunel designed station to Berkeley Road station

Help a historically valuable and unique national museum collection, previously at Winchcombe, to be re-established and extended at Sharpness

ShedOur impressive engineering base at the Old Engine House on Sharpness Docks, where we are preparing everything we need to rejuvenate the branch line, is already at work restoring the locomotives and equipment we need to rejuvenate the branch line.

Soon we will move to our next stage, phase 1, where we plan to build an interim Sharpness Station, small visitor centre and basic locomotive and train servicing facilities from where to begin steam hauled train services to Berkeley.

For this we need investment and volunteer support.  Whether you are a casual railway admirer or ardent railway enthusiast, please come and join us today and become a Member of the Vale of Berkeley Railway Charitable Trust.  As a volunteer you will gain the satisfaction of knowing that, as a railway preservation pioneer in a happy and democratically run environment, you are playing a vital role in helping to lovingly recreate this unique Gloucestershire branch line.

The Vale of Berkeley Railway has undeniably fantastic prospects and a great future ahead of it, linking local tourist attractions and offering a seamless heritage railway/canal ride experience for all the family to enjoy.
